Do you hear that? It’s the sound of battles fought and lives lost. It once pained me to know that I am the cause of such despair. But now their cries give me strength. Beauty is my power.
» The Reaping: Finnick Odair
“Finnick Odair!”
The 14 year old boy had always known it could happen. He had been training and working hard since he was a child in case this happened, and his father always told him what he needed to know about the horrible games that took kids from his district each year. Nevertheless, when he heard his name being called out by the woman in shiny clothes that was standing in the podium, his heart leaped and a gasp almost left his mouth. He swallowed, reminding himself to contain his emotions, and cleaned his sweaty hands in his trousers, forcing his legs to move towards the stairs. He could hear quiet cries coming from some of the girls as he passed by, who were heartbroken: the cute boy of the district was leaving to fight to death, and there was a big chance he wouldn’t be coming back.Finnick allowed himself to look at them for a second, and his eyes fixed on a small and lovely girl; he had seen her before, she was the daughter of the Cresta family. She was staring at him with wide, sea green eyes, her long dark hair waving with the wind, and he could hear the goodbye that was on her closed lips. And he hated it, he hated the fear that was clearly present in her and in all of those small kids, and even though he was too young, he promised himself he would try to win, no matter how small the chances were. The games had already started, and he was ready.

“Elena, it’s no easy task being an ordinary parent to an extraordinary child. I failed in that task. And because of my prejudices, I failed you. I’m haunted by how things might have played out differently if I’d been more willing to hear your side of things. For me, it’s the end. For you, a chance to grow old and someday do better with your own child than I did with mine. It’s for that child that I give you my ring. I don’t ask for your forgiveness, nor for you to forget. I ask only that you believe this. Whether you are now reading this as a human or as a vampire, I love you all the same. As I’ve always loved you and always will. John.” John Gilbert
